Cleaning Bamboo Flooring
Bamboo flooring is a beautiful way to enhance the home. Maintaining the bamboo flooring properly will insure that the beauty lasts for many years to come.
As with any hardwood floor, there are some common tips that should be followed and some that are specific to the bamboo. These steps include the following:
* Prior to putting the furniture back into room and on top of the new flooring protective felt should be put on the bottoms so that the flooring doesn’t get scratched or dented.
* Place floor mats and rugs in high traffic areas to prevent excessive dirt build up from traffic. High traffic areas have a tendency to accumulate dirt and debris; dirt and debris that can cause scratches.
* The finish on the bamboo flooring should be formaldehyde-free and water based. This top sealant will make the floor easier to clean and more resistant to water damage. The type of top coating will also determine the warranty and life of the floor.
* Dirt and debris should be removed on a regular basis to prevent buildup. A dust mop or dry floor mop should be used. There are many inexpensive floor dusters on the market that are ideal for hardwood floors. Do not use hard brushes or vacuums with rolling brushes that can damage the floors. Do not mop with water.
* Spills should be cleaned immediately. Do not allow liquids to remain on the floor for long periods of time. Although the flooring will have a protective finish, spills should be avoided. After the spill has been cleaned up the area should be wiped again with a dry cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals to clean the flooring.
* Bamboo flooring will fade over a period of time. The fading effect can be lessened by limiting the amount of sunlight that reaches the floor. Keep blinds closed during periods of intense sunlight. If this is not possible, use small rugs to cover the floor area that receives the most sun.
* Check the humidity level in the home. It should be kept between 40 and 50 percent. If is high, consider adding a dehumidifier to prevent the flooring from warping and swelling. If the humidity level is too low, the floors can crack or separate. Adding a humidifier can increase the humidity.
* If the bamboo flooring becomes severely stained or scratched, a professional should be contacted. Don’t attempt to use chemicals, sanders or abrasives to attempt to remove the stains. Only a professional who knows how to remove them without damaging the floor further.
Bamboo flooring is not difficult to maintain and will bring years of beauty to the home. It is not intended for use in rooms with high humidity or moisture, such as bathrooms or saunas. Cleaning with a dust mop on a regular basis and contacting a professional if severe stains are found will keep the floor looking like it did the day it was installed.
